An Explanation of BCSPLAYOFFS.COM
Just think what the Boise St win would do to a playoff bracket!!!
But since we don't have a playoff system, an undefeated team is denied
a chance to be "Nat'l Champions" because they aren't a 'BCS'
team! |
It
seems like every year I jot down on scrap paper my thoughts on a playoff system
for college football utilizing the BCS standings. Well, I decided to actually organize it for
scrutiny, praise and suggestions. While I might agree with some that an eight
team or even a four team playoff is sufficient, sixteen teams will be used in my
‘proposal’ due to the fact you will never get a four or eight team playoff
because of TV, sponsorship, etc revenue issues.
This is not a ‘report’ on the good and/or bad of the BCS; it demonstrates
how the BCS rankings can be used.
I
will offer two proposals to two different situations. The first being the
obvious, and that is, who gets a shot at the National Title. The second set of proposals will address
dates of games to accommodate the NFL schedule. I have also addressed issues
relating to the number of regular season games and monetary payout to bowl
participants and winners.
For these proposals, I will use the final 2005 NCAA BCS
rankings/conference champs and the 2005/2006 NFL schedule.
For simplification purposes, both scenarios will assume
the higher-ranking team to win each game.
Major Sports Championship Facts
- There have been 7 undefeated, 13 one-loss teams, 23 two loss-teams, 7 three-loss
teams, 4 four loss-teams and 1 five-loss teams since 1948 win the Men’s
NCAA National Championship Basketball tournament. This would indicate 21 teams going into the
tourney with an undefeated record and 35 teams with 4 losses during the regular
season (including conference tourney).
- The Women’s National Basketball Tourney has seen only 4
undefeated teams win it all, 9 one-loss teams, 9 two-loss teams, and 1
three-loss team since 1982. Again, this
would indicate 13 teams entering the tourney with an unblemished
record.
- There has been only one undefeated NFL team win the Super Bowl
- There has NEVER been a MLB team win the World Series with
zero losses during the regular season. (Granted, they play 162 games + post
season games in a ‘best of’ format.)
- No NBA team has ever gone undefeated in the regular season.
