Now to address the issue of the number of games played by a team. This may be the sticking point. But I’ll try to keep the total number of games that the two teams in the championship game play to 15 over the course of the season (16 games for a split conference team.)
- Everyone plays an 11 game schedule (Regular season currently is 12 at the
most I believe.) Eliminate one non-conference game.
- Each team gets only one bye a season. I’ll allow a caveat for the split
conferences – ONLY if they start the season the second to last Saturday in
August, then they are allowed two byes. (Can’t be the last day of the regular
season)
Every team plays their first game by the second to last or last
Saturday in August. This will allow for a 12-week season (remember the
bye)
- The regular season should end the week before Thanksgiving. Thus allowing
for a conference championship game on Thanksgiving weekend for the SEC, Big 12,
ACC, Conference USA and Mid America. (Four teams in these five conferences will
have 12 Games prior to playoffs).
- With the regular season ending the week prior to Thanksgiving, all teams
(exception: 2 Big 12 teams/2 SEC teams) would have 2 weeks off prior to the
start of the playoffs and the 4 split conference teams would have a week if the
tourney/playoff schedule allowing for the national championship game to be
played on/about New Years was followed.
- If the schedule that allowed for the Nat’l Championship game to be played
the day before the Super Bowl was used, each team would have just over a month
of time off for finals, injury recovery, etc
