Under the current structure, there are 32 bowl games.  In my proposals there is a total of bowl games.  This would mean 13 less college football games during bowl season, but 15 more games that actually mean something in terms of deciding a true national champion.

Each game could still have a ‘bowl title’, using the top 15 bowl names – Sugar Bowl to the Independence Bowl.  Since dropping 13 bowl games would also be dropping those sponsors and dollars, you could double up sponsors for 13 of the 15 bowl games – for example, currently, it’s the AXA Liberty Bowl, but the new bowl name could be Gaylord Hotels/AXA Liberty Bowl. This would/could at a minimum, also maintain the current level of sponsorship revenue the Football Bowl Association has to payout to each team.  Each team that makes a playoff bowl game would still receive money for playing.  The total money would be cumulative to the National Championship Game.  This proposal will still allow each bowl team to receive money more than the minimum paid out last year.

I will break down which Bowl Games stay.  Also, I will list which Bowl Games represent each round based on  the current 2006 season.

  • Round 1 – Alamo Bowl, Holiday Bowl, Independence Bowl, Tangerine Bowl, Sun Bowl, Liberty Bowl, Peach Bowl and Gator Bowl.

  • Round 2 – Outback Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Capital One Bowl - (formerly the Citrus Bowl), and Sugar Bowl.

  • Round 3 – Fiesta Bowl and Orange Bowl

  • Round 4(Nat’l champ game) – Rose Bowl

That’s it. No other bowl games. No Silicon Valley Bowl, no Humanitarian Bowl, etc. I believe the above bowls are basically the ‘original’ or most well-known bowl games. You could also rotate the three bowls in rounds 3 and 4 to host the championship game as is done now.
